2010ஆம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்டு மாதம் 25ம் தேதி, மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சிகரமாக கழித்த நாட்ககளில் ஒன்று. அன்றைய தினம் தான் பல்லவர்கள் தலை நகராம் காஞ்சி மாநகரில், சில மணி நேரங்களை பழங்கால சிற்பங்களை ரசித்து கொண்டும் வியந்தும் மகிழ்ந்தோம். காலை சுமார் 8.30 மணி அளவில் வீட்டில் (மண்ணிவக்கம்)இருந்து பாலாஜி ட்ரவல்ஸ் கார் மூலம் சிறு மழை தூரலில்( சுற்று சூழல் சீர்கேட்டால் காலம் இல்லாத காலத்தில் பெய்யும் மழை). காஞ்சி நகர் நோக்கி பயணம் தொடங்கினோம் நானும் என் சகோதரர் ஸ்ரீதரனும், கண்ணனும்.

வரதர் கோவில் வாசல்

வரதர் கோவில் சந்நிதி வாயில் அருகில்

படப்பை, ஒரகடம், வாலாஜாபாத் வழியாக சுமார் 10 மணி அளவில் சின்ன காஞ்சிபுரம் பேரருளாளன் எனப்படும் வரதராஜ பெருமாள் கோவில்(108 திவ்ய தேசங்களுள் ஒன்று) சென்றடைந்தோம். அங்கே மனம் குளிர பேரருளாளனை தரிசித்துவிட்டு, வெளியே திருக்குளத்தை ஒட்டியிள்ள சிற்ப மண்டபம் மற்றும் சுற்றுபகுதிகளை படம் பிடித்துக்கொண்டோம். மண்டபத்தின் எதிரே விற்கும் பிரசாத கடையில் புளியோதரை மற்றும் மிளகு வடை வாங்கி சுவைத்தோம், இவை இரண்டும் தவர விட கூடாதவை. ஆதி மூலவர் எனப்படும் அத்தி மரத்தால் ஆன அத்தி வரதர் திருக்குளத்தின் உள்ளேயே சயன திருக்கோலத்தில் உள்ளார், 40 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒரு முறை தான் குளத்தில் இருந்து வெளியே வந்து சுமார் 10 நாட்க்கள் பக்த்ர்களுக்கு அருள்வார். குளக்கரையில் சக்கரத்தாழ்வார் நரசிம்மருடன் காட்சி அளிக்கிறார்.

வரதர் கோவில் குளம்

பின்னர் அங்கிருந்து பெரிய காஞ்சிபுரம் சென்று அங்கு ஏகாம்பரநாதர் கோவில் அருகில் உள்ள பாண்டவ தூத பெருமாள் கோவில்(108 திவ்ய தேசங்களுள் ஒன்று) சென்றோம். நான் முன்பே ஒரு முறை இந்த கோவிலுக்கு சென்றிறுப்பதால் இந்த கோவிலின் சிறப்பு தெரியும், கெளரவர் சபையில் விசுவரூபம் எடுத்த கண்ணபிரானின் சுமார் 28 அடி உயர அமர்ந்த திருக்கோலம் தான் இங்கு மூலவர், என் சகோதரர்கள் இருவரும் மூலவரை பார்த்து பிரமித்து போனார்கள். நான் இந்த கோவிலை பற்றியும் பெருமாளை பற்றியும் முன்பே புத்த்கங்கள் மூலமாகவும், வலைதளங்கள் மூலமாகவும் அறிந்திருந்த்தால் சும்மர் ஒரு வருட்த்திற்க்கு முன்பு ஒரு முறை தரிசித்து இருக்கிறேன். பாண்டவர்களின் பேரன் ஒருவன் கண்ணபிரானின் விசுவரூபத்தை கான வேண்டி காஞ்சி வந்து யாகங்கள் செய்து கண்ணன் பாண்டவ தூத கோலத்துடன் காட்சி அளித்த்தாக புராணம் சொல்கிறது. அனைவரும் பார்த்து பிரமித்து மகிழவேண்டிய பெருமான்.

பாண்டவ தூதர் கோவில் கோபுரம்

பின்பு அங்கிருந்து காமாட்சி அம்மன் கோவில் அருகில் இருக்கும் உலகளந்த பெருமாள் கோவில்லுக்கு(108 திவ்ய தேசங்களுள் ஒன்று) சென்றோம். மாபலி சக்கரவர்த்தியிடம் 3அடி மண் கேட்டு ஓர் அடியால் பூமியையும் ஓர் அடியால் வானத்தையும் அளந்துவிட்டு மூன்றாம் அடி எங்கே என மாபலியை கேட்க்க என் சிரம் தான் மூன்றாம் அடி என சொல்ல தன் திருவடியால் மாபலியை பாதாளத்தில் அழுத்தும் கோலத்தில் மிகவும் உயரமான பெருமாள்(பாண்டவதூத பெருமாளை போலவே). இந்த கோவிலின் உள்ளேயே இன்னும் மூன்று திவ்ய தேசங்கள் உள்ளன(காரகம், நீரகம், கார்வண்ணம்). உலகளந்த பெருமாள் சந்னிதியிலேயே ஆதிசேஷ ரூபமாக பெருமாள்(ஊரகத்தான்) தனியே காட்சி தருகிறார். இதுவும் அனைவரும் பார்த்து அதிசயிக்க வேண்டிய திருக்கோவில்.

உலகளந்த பெருமாள் கோவில் வாசல்

எகாம்பர நாதர் கோவில் மாவடி

அடுத்தபடியாக கச்சி ஏகம்பன் என பக்தர்கள் போற்றும் ஏகாம்பரநாதர் திருக்கோவிலுக்கு சென்றோம். சிவ பெருமான் லிங்க திருமேனி மட்டும் அல்லாமல் மனுட உருவத்திலும் காட்ச்சி அளிக்கும் வெகு சில திருத்தலங்களில் ஒன்று. பஞ்ச பூத தலங்களில் மண் தலம். புராண வரலாற்றின் படி சுந்தர மூர்த்தி நாயனாருக்கு ஒரு கண் பார்வை திரும்ப்ப கிடைத்த தலம். 3500 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான மாமரம் இருந்த திருத்தலம். பார்வதி சிவபெருமானின் அருள்பெர மாமரத்தி அடியில் தவம் இருந்த போது அந்த தவத்தை சோதிக்க சிவன் அந்த மாமரத்தை எரிக்க பார்வதி திருமாலை பிராத்திக்க பெருமால் சங்கு சக்கர தாரியாக அம்ருத கிரணங்களை கொண்டு மாமரத்தை தழைக்க செய்த்தாகவும், புரானம் செல்கிறது. இந்த நிகழ்வை நினைவு கூரும் வகையில் பெருமாள் அங்கேயெ ”நிலா திங்கள் தூண்டன்” (108 திவ்ய தேசங்களுள் ஒன்று) என்னும் பெயரோடு காட்சி அருள்கிரார். இந்த பெருமாள் சந்நிதியிலேயே சற்று உள்ளே நோக்கினால் இன்னோரு பெருமாள் சிலை உள்ளது, இதை பற்றி அர்ச்சகரை விசாரித்த்தில் அவர் சொன்ன தகவல், அந்த சிலை தான் முதலில் இருந்த சிலை என்றும் அந்த சிலை பின்னம் அடைந்த்தால் இப்போதுள்ள சிலை ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ண தேவராயர் காலத்தில் நிறுவப்பட்ட்தாகவும் சொன்னார்.

புராண வரலாற்றை சொல்லும் சிற்பங்கள்

மற்றோர் சோதனையாக சிவன் தன் தலையில் உள்ள கங்கையை ப்ரவகிக்க செய்கிரான் தான் பிடித்து வைத்துள்ள மணலான லிங்கம் தண்ணீரில் அடித்து கொண்டு போக கூடாதென லிங்கத்தை தழுவிக்கொள்ள சிவன் மகிழ்ந்து காட்ச்சி அளித்து பார்வதியை மனந்த்தாக கதை.

மிகவும் பிரம்மாண்டமான திருக்கோவில், பெரிய சுற்று பிரகாரம். அழகான திருக்குளம். அருமையான சுதை நந்தி என மிகவும் அழகான திருக்கோவில். இங்கும் பிரசாத கடையில் விற்கும் பிரசாதம் மிகவும் சுவை மிகுந்த்தாகும். இந்த கோவில் தரிசனம் மற்றும் படங்கள் எடுத்து முடிக்கும் போது மதியம் கோவில் மூடும் நேரமாகிவிட்ட்து.

தம்பி நவனீதகண்ணன் ஆலோசனையின் பேரில் பேருந்து நிலையம் அருகில் உள்ள ”அடையாறு ஆனந்த பவன்” உணவகத்தில் மதிய உணவு அருந்தினோம். முழுசப்பாடு 60 ரூபாய்க்கு அருமையாக இருந்த்து. உணவு இடை வேளைக்கு பிறகு சரித்திர முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த கைலாசநாதர் கோவிலுக்கு சென்றோம்.

அண்ணனும் கண்ணனும்

கைலாச நாதர் கோவில் புல்வெளிமுதல் வான் வெளி வரை

மிகவும் பழமையான இந்த கோவில் இப்போது இந்திய தொல்பொருள் துறை பராமரிப்பில் உள்ளதால் நன்கு பரமரிக்க படுகிறது. ASI பராமரிப்பில் இருப்பதால் மூலவர் சந்நிதி தவிர மற்ற வெளி பிரகாரங்கள் திறந்தே இருந்தன. கோவிலின் வெளியே தொல்பொருள்துறை வளர்த்த அழகால புல் வெளி கோவிலுக்கு மேலும் எழில் சேர்க்கிறது. ஏறக்குறைய 7-8ம் நூற்றாண்டு காலத்தில் ராஜசிம்ம பல்லவனால் கட்டபட்ட கோவில் என சரித்திரம் சொல்கிறது. இன்னோரு பழமையான வைகுந்த பெருமாள் கோவிலை தரிசிக்கும் என்னத்தோடு, இந்த கோவிலில் சுவாமி தரிசனம் செய்யாமல், ஏறக்குறைய 2.15 மணி அளவில் சென்று 3.45 மணி அளவில் சில நூறு படங்கள் எடுத்துகொண்டு அங்கிருந்து திரும்பினோம்.

பின்பு தான் தெரிந்த்து இந்த கோவில் மூலவர் சந்நிதியின் சிறப்பு, மூலவரை சுற்றிவர ஆரம்பிக்கும் இடத்தில் குனிந்து தவழ்ந்து தான் ஆரம்பிக்க வேண்டும் பிறகு சிறிது தூரம் செல்ல செல்ல நிமிர்ந்து சாதரனமாக நடக்கலாம் சுற்று முடியும் இடத்தில் மீண்டும் குனிந்து தவழ்ந்து வந்து தான் முடிக்க முடியும். இதன் தத்துவம் என்னவென்றால், ஒரு மனிதன் குழந்தையாக பிறந்து தவழ்ந்து பிறகு நடந்து வயோதிகத்தில் கூன் வளைந்து குனிந்து தவழ்ந்து தான் தன் வாழ்கையை முடிக்கிறான். இந்த பெருமானை இப்படி வலம் வந்தால் மீண்டும் ஒரு பிறப்பு என்பதே கிடையாது என்பது நம்பிக்கை. இந்த கோவிலுக்கு விஜயம் செய்த ராஜ ராஜ சோழன் இதை விட பிரம்மாண்டமாக ஒரு கோவிலை கட்ட வேண்டும் என என்னம் கொண்டு தான் தஞ்சை பெருவுடையார் கோவிலை கட்டினான் என வரலாறு. கைலாச நாதரை தரிசிக்காமல் வந்த்து சற்று விசனத்தையே தறுகிறது இப்போது.

நந்தியெம்பெருமான் பார்வையில்

வாயில் வழியே நந்தி

வைகுந்த பெருமாள் கோவில் வாயிலும்,அதை ஒட்டிய்யே மசூதியும்

சுமார் நான்கு மணி அளவில் வைகுந்த பெருமாள் கோவில் எனப்படும் “பரமேஸ்வர விண்ணகரம்” என ஆழ்வார்கள் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்த திருக்கோவிலை சென்றடந்தோம். கி.பி. 674-800 காலகட்ட்த்தில் 2ம் நந்தி வர்ம பல்லவனால் கட்டப்பட்ட கோவில். திருமால், இருந்த, கிடந்த, நின்ற திருக்கோலங்களில் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். காஞ்சிபுரம் பேருந்து நிலையம் அருகிலேயே இந்த கோவில் அமைந்துள்ளது. கோவில் பல் வேறு சிற்பங்களுடன், 3 அடுக்குகளாக அமைந்துள்ளது. கீழ் அடுக்கில் பெருமாள் அமர்ந்த திருக்கோலத்தில் மிகவும் அழகுடன் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். இரண்டாம் அடுக்கில் திருமால் சயன திருக்கோலத்தில் ஸ்ரீதேவி பூதேவியுடன் ரங்கநாதராக அருளிறார். மேல் தள்த்தில் பெருமான் பரவாசுதேவனாக நின்ற திருக்கதில் இருக்கிறானாம். பொதுவா மக்கள் சென்று பார்க்க கூடிய வகையிலே கீழ் அடுக்கில் உள்ள வீற்றிருக்கும் பெருமாள் மட்டுமே உள்ளார். நாங்கள் சென்றிருந்த போது ASI அதிகாரி ஒருவர் அவரது உறவினர்களுடன் வந்திருந்த காரணத்தால், 2ம் அடுக்கு திறக்க பட்ட்து, அதன் காரனமாக எங்களுக்கும் தரிசனம் கிடைத்த்து. இல்லை என்றாம் ஏகாதசி நாட்க்களில் மட்டுமே தரிசன்ம் கிட்டுமாம்.

பல்லவரின் சிற்பக்கலை

இனி இந்த கோவில் பற்றி ஒரு புராண கதை:

வித்ர்ப்ப தேசத்தை ஆண்ட விரோசன்னுக்கு மக்கட்பேரில்லாமல் காஞ்சி கைலாசநாதரை பூசிக்க அவர் அருளால் விஷ்ணுவின் வாயில் காவலர்கள் 2 மகன்களாக பல்லவன், வில்லவன் என பிறந்தனர். அந்த மகன் கள் இருவரும் பெருமாளை வேண்டி யாகம் செய்ய, திருமால் ஸ்ரீ வைகுண்ட நாதனாக சேவை சாதித்த படி அமர்ந்த திருக்கோலத்தில் வந்த்தாக நம்பிக்கை.

இப்போது ஒரு சரித்திர கதை ASI அதிகாரி சொன்னது, 2ம் அடுக்கில் உள்ள் ரங்கநாதர் மிகவும் பெரிய திருக்கோலத்துடன் இருந்த்தாகவும் முற்காலத்தில் அன்னியர் படை எடுப்பின் போது அவர்கள் ரங்கநாதர் சிலயை சேதப்படுத்தி அப்புறபடுத்தி விட்ட்தாகவும் சொன்னார். இப்போதுள்ள சிலை சில காலம் முன் ASI சிறிய அளவில் செய்து வைத்திப்பதாகவும் சொன்னார்

Manimangalam is about 8 km west of Tambaram on the Vandalur- Sriperumbudur Road.

The village is historically important because in the 7th century, Manimangalam was the scene of a great battle between the Pallava ruler, Mamalla,

and the Chalukyan monarch, Pulikesin II. It is renowned for an old temple of Sri Rajagoplan temple and Sri Dharmeswara Temple.

Manimangalam is about 32 km to the east of Kanchipuram.

Like No. 40, this inscription is dated on a week-day which will probably admit of calculation, in the 18th year of the reign of

Tribhuvanachakravartin Rajarajadeva. It records that the same two brothers, who are mentioned in No. 39 above, paid to the authorities of the

Dharmesvaa temple two kalanju of gold, from the interest of which the cost of feeding two lamps had to be defrayed.

(Line 1.) Hail ! Prosperity ! With the approval of the god, - in the 18th year (of the reign) of the emperor of the three worlds, Sri-Rajarajadeva,

on the day of Revati, which corresponded to a Tuesday and to the second tithi of the second fortnight of the month of Simha, - we, all the

holders of the land (kani) of the Siva-Brahmanas of the temple of the lord Tanmisvara at Manimangalam, alias Gramasikhamani-

chaturvedimangalam, in Kunrattur-nadu, (a subdivision) of Puliyur-kottam, alias Kulottunga-Sola-valanadu, (a district) of Jayankonda-Sola-mandalam,

(viz.,) Gautaman Ambalakkutta-Bhattan, Kasyappan Gangadhara-Bhattan, and the partners[4] of Kasyapan Truchchirrambala-Bhattan, received on

interest from Brahmapriyan, the eldest son of Panchanadi Lakshmanan Malaiginiyaninran, the accountant of this village, and his younger brother

Ahavamalladevan 2 kalanju of pure gold (under the condition) that we should burn at early dawn from this day two sacred lamps which (those two

persons) had given (to the temple).

(L. 8.) We, all these persons, caused to be engraved on stone that, having received these two kalanju of gold, we shall be bound to burn (those

two lamps) as long as the moon and the sun exist.

Theppam Festival is celeberated in Mudichur "Srividhyambigai samedha Bheemeshwarar" (popularly known as Mudichur Siva Vishnu kovil) temple every year on Karthigai Deepam day. This year also it was celeberated with usual spirit. All the people in the surrounding of mudichur and mannivakkam village celeberated the festival with joy.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram

Gangaikonda Cholapuram (Tamil: கங்கைகொண்ட சோழபுரம்) was erected as the capital of the Cholas by Rajendra Chola I, the son and successor of Rajaraja Chola, the great Chola who conquered a large area in South India at the beginning of the 11th century C.E. It occupies an important place in the history of India. As the capital of the Cholas from about 1025 C.E. for about 250 years, the city controlled the affairs of entire south India, from the Tungabhadra in the north to Ceylon in the south. The great temple of Siva at this place is next only to the Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur in its monumental nature and surpasses it in sculptural quality.

The city was founded by Rajendra Chola to commemorate his victorious march to the Ganges. The name means The town of the chola who captured the Ganges. It is now a small village, its past eminence only remembered by the existence of the great Siva Temple.
C. 1022 C.E. Rajendra undertook an expedition to the Ganges along the east coast of peninsular India. The emperor himself accompanying the army up to the banks of the Godavari river. The Chola armies conquered all the countries north of Vengi, which included Kalinga, Odda, Southern Kosala, the lower and upper Lada and finally the Vangaladesa (Bengal). The triumphant Chola armies brought back waters from the river Ganges in golden vessels.
To commemorate this celebrated victory, Rajendra assumed the title of Gangaikonda Chola and had the Siva Temple Gangakkondacholeswaram built. Soon after the capital was moved from Thanjavur to Gangaikondacholapuram. The city of Gangaikondacholapuram was probably founded by Rajendra before his 17th year.
Most of the Chola kings who succeeded Rajendra were crowned here. They retained it as their capital, reoriented and trained the efficient Chola army.

Judging from the available literature and the remains we may conclude that it was an extensive city, carefully planned and laid in accordance with the architectural treatises to suit the needs of a capital.
The city seems to have had two fortifications, one inner and the other outer. The outer was probably wider. The remains of the outer fortification can be seen as a mound running all around the palace.
The outer fortification built of burnt bricks, was about six to eight feet wide. It consisted of two walls, the intervening space (the core) being filled with sand. The bricks are fairly large in size and are made of well-burnt clay. Systematic brick robbing by the local inhabitants has reduced this structure to its current state.
The outer fortification was known as Rajendra Chola Madil and is mentioned in inscriptions. The inner fortification was around the royal palace, probably identical with the Utpadi vittu madil of the inscriptions.
Probably in the reign of Kulothunga Chola I, the fortifications were renewed and the city underwent some alteration and additions. An epigraph refers to the fort wall of Kulothunga Chola (Kulottunga Cholan Thirumadil). The strengthening of the fortification and additions to the city in the reign of Kulothunga I were probably necessitated by the uprising which led to the murder of Chola king Adirajendra, Kulothunga's predecessor.

The temple of Gangaikondacholisvara is approached through the northern entrance from the road. The passage passes through the enclosure wall and leads on to the inner court.
As one steps in, the great Vimana arrests the visitor's sight. The Vimana with its recessed corners and upward movement presents a striking contrast to the straight-sided pyramidal tower of Tanjavur. As it rises to a height of 160 feet and is shorter than the Tanjavur tower, it is often described as the feminine counterpart of the Tanjavur temple.
The Vimana is flanked on either side by small temples; the one in the north now housing the Goddess is fairly well preserved. The small shire of Chandikesvara is near the steps in the north. In the north-east are a shire housing Durga, a well called lion-well (simhakeni) with a lion figure guarding its steps and a late mandapa housing the office. Nandi is in the east facing the main shrine. In the same direction is the ruined gopura, the entrance tower. The main tower surrounded by little shrines truly presents the appearance of a great Chakravarti (emperor) surrounded by chieftains and vassals. The Gangaikondacholapuram Vimana is undoubtedly a devalaya chakravarti, an emperor among temples of South India.

The epigraphs also refer to the Madhurantaka Vadavaru, now called the Vadavaru, running about six kilometers east of the ruined capital. Madhurntaka Vedavaru, named after one of the titles of Rajendra I, was a source of irrigation to a vast stretch of land bordering the capital. An irrigation channel called Anaivettuvan (destroyer of elephants) is also mentioned.
There were both wet and dry lands inside the Fort, used for cultivation and other purposes. The present positions of the existing temples throw some light on the lay out of the city. With the palace as the centre to the city, the great temple, and the other temples in the city seem to have been erected. Towards the northeast (Isanya) of the palace is the great temple of Siva. The Siva temple according to Vastu and traditional texts should be in the northeast of the city or village and should face east. The temple of Vishnu should be in the west.
A number of small tanks and ponds mentioned in inscriptions and a number of wells, supplied drinking water to the residents.

This capital of the most powerful empire in Asia at one time is now desolate; only the temple of Gangaikondachola survives.
What caused the destruction of this city? The Pandyas who put an end to the Chola empire late in the 13th century, avenging their earlier defeats, should have razed the city to the ground, a misfortune that befell on capitals in early times. It should have remained a heap of brick debris, the inhabitants of the nearby villages pilfering the bricks for their constructions. The people have also dug systematically deep into the ground and extracted cartloads of ancient bricks.

Dr. James C. Harle in his excellent work the 'Temple gateways in South India' states that
"the gopura of the great temple at Gangaikondacholapuram (A.D. 1030) belongs as far s one can tell in its present ruined state to the same early phase of development as the Tanjavur gopuras. It was neither as large or as complex, however, as the Tanjavur gopuras. On plan, the whole edifice forms a rectangle approximately 60 feet by 33 feet. Large dvarapals were placed on the outer facade. One of them now lies on the ground in front of the gopura and measures atleast seven feet. The unique dvara, as at Tanjavur, is on the outerside of the entryway. The vestibules have two storeys, divided by a crude and massive architrave; in the lower, an exposed stair is built against the back wall; above a doorway in the same wall may have led either to another stairway or to a circumambulatory corridor."
Dr. Harle further states that an early photograph (photo No. 2452 Indian Museum, Calcutta) shows the three upper storeys of the gopura, in a dilapidated condition.

Tanjai Periya Kovil

A 107 paragraph long inscription on the walls of the Vimanam records the contributions of Raja Raja Chola and his sister Kundavai to the Thanjavur temple. The temple stands within a fort, whose walls are later additions built in the 16th century. The towering vimanam is about 200 feet in height and is referred to as Dakshina Meru. The octogonal Shikharam rests on a single block of granite weighing 81 tons. It is believed that this block was carried up a specially built ramp built from a site 6 kilometeres away from here. Huge Nandis dot the corners of the Shikharam, and the Kalasam on top by itself is about 3.8 meteres in height. Hundreds of stucco figures bejewel the Vimanam, although it is possible that some of these may have been added on during the Maratha period. The Shivalingam - Peruvudaiyar, Rajarajeswaramudaiyar - is a huge one, set in a two storeyed sanctum, and the walls surrounding the sanctum delight visitors as a storehouse of murals and sculpture.

The long prakaram surrounds the great temple (500 feet/250 feet), and the walls surrounding the prakaram again go back to Raja Raja Cholan's period. The walls house long pillared corridors, which abound in murals, Shiva Lingams and Nandis. The Periya Nayaki temple within the temple is a later addition from the Pandya period, and so is the Subramanyar Temple sung later by the Saint poet Arunagirinathar.

Incidents from the lives of the Nayanmars, several of the 108 Bharata Natyam Dance postures, manifestations of Shiva (Aadalvallaan - Nataraja, Tripurantaka, Dakshinamurthi etc.) are depicted in sculptured panels or in exquisite Chola murals. Both the interior, and the exterior walls of the temple, are replete with images of the kind described above.

The sanctum, the ardhamandapam, the mukhamandapam and the Mahamandapam, although distinct, form a composite unit with an imposing appearance that awes visitors, forcing one to wonder how such timeless architectural feat was executed about a 1000 years ago. Entrances to the Mandapams and the towered entrances to the Prakarams are majestic. The grandeur of the architecture and the sculptural finesse speaks volumes of the skills of the Imperial Cholas.

Inscriptions refer to Shiva as Dakshina Meru Vitankar and Aadavallan. The Nandi, which dates back to the Nayak period, is housed in its own mandapam and it matches up to the grandeur and size of the temple. It is a monolithic Nandi weighing about 25 tonnes, and is about 12 feet high and 20 feet long.

Alagar Koyil (Alagar temple), also known as Azhagarkovil, is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu situated 21 km from the city of Madurai, which lies in the Tamil Nadu state of India.According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu visits Madurai taking the human form of Alagar to give away his sister Meenakshi in marriage to Sundareswarar. But He then storms out of the city at the perceived insult by the city, which did not throw a formal welcome in his honor.
Ever since, Meenakshi Kalayalam (Meenakshi's Marriage) is re-enacted every year as part of the Chithirai festival in the famous Madurai Meenakshi temple. The Kallalagar (Alagar comes in a disguise of a bandit through the forest) procession also takes place to re-enact Alagar crossing Vaigai river to attend his sister's marriage. The Mahabharata says that this temple was visited by both Yudhisthira and Arjuna.
Alagar Koyil (Temple of Alagar) is situated on hill, and hence, the place is also known as Alagar Hill. The statues of Lord Kallalagar can be found in seated, standing and reclining postures in this temple. Alagar is popularly known as Soundara Rajan, meaning 'very beautiful king'. This temple is also famous for its shrine of Karuppa Swamy, the guardian deity. There is also a temple for Lord Muruga at the top of the nearby hill.

Pazamudir Cholai

This is one of the six of the holiest of Murugan shrines refered to as the Aarupadai Veedugal.
Unlike the other five temples, there is no grand edifice surrounding the central shrine of worship. However, this is a holy shrine venerated by the Skanda puranam and by Nakkeerar’s Thirumurugatrupadai of the Sangam period. Arunagirinathar's Thirupugazh also reveres this shrine.
This shrine is located on a hill adjacent to the Kallazhagar Temple in the outskirts of Madurai, a fortified temple complex, revered as one of the 108 abodes of Vishnu glorified by the hymns of the Alwars. Also near Madurai is another of the Aarupadai Veedu shrines, Tirupparamkunram.

Legends - Puranas and Mythology There is a famous legend associated with the temple - it is said that Avvaiyar, a famous tamil poet and a Muruga Bakthai(Muruga Devotee), came here when her knowledge was put to test by Lord Muruga, taking the form of a small boy. Lord Muruga presents himself as Sri Subrahmanya, along with his celestial consorts - Valli and Deivayani (also known as Devasena, the daughter of Indran) in the main sanctum sanctorum. Here, Valli is considered to be ICHCHA SAKTHI (Power of will), Deivayani to be KRIYA SAKTHI (Power of doing) and Lord Muruga himself is considered to be GNANA SAKTHI (Power of Knowledge). It is believed that the Lord was worshipped in the form of a Vel in ancient times. The stala vriksham for Pazhamudircholai temple is the Naval Maram (reverred by Avvaiyar).

History of the Temple There are conflicting opinion among the scholars as to the location of the actual Pazhamudircholai temple - though the one near madurai is now considered to be authentic by many. No elaborate history is available for this temple as the temple itself is of recent origin - though Muruga worship here is several hundered years old.

Mahabalipuram was a 7th century port city of the South Indian dynasty of the Pallavas around 60 km south from the city of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It is believed to have been named after the Pallava king Mamalla . It has various historic monuments built largely between the 7th and the 9th century , and has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .The monuments are mostly rock-cut and monolithic, and constitute the early stages of Dravidian architecture wherein Buddhist elements of design are prominently visible. They are constituted by cave temples, monolithic rathas (chariots), sculpted reliefs and structural temples. The pillars are of the Dravidian order. The sculptures are excellent examples of Pallava art.
It is believed by some that this area served as a school for young sculptors. The different sculptures, some half finished, may have been examples of different styles of architecture, probably demonstrated by instructors and practiced on by young students. This can be seen in the Pancha Rathas where each Ratha is sculpted in a different style.

The Pamban Bridge on the Palk Strait connects Pamban island to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It is the longest sea bridge in India at a length of about 2.3 km.From the elevated two-lane road bridge, adjoining islands and the parallel rail bridge below can be viewed.The railway bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m)[1] and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge contains a still-functioning vertical lift section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge.The railway bridge historically carried meter-gauge trains on it, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that finished Aug. 12, 2007.

The bridge spans a 2 km-straight between mainland India and Rameshwaram island and is the only surface transport link between the two.
The straight, part of the larger Adam's Bridge (also known as Rama's Bridge), is famous for the bridge and scenic beauty. The channel was not damaged in the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake and tsunami.

One of the Aru Padaiveedu, the six main abodes of Lord Muruga, Tiruparankunram offers a mystic beauty. It is carved in rock and is monstrous in size for such an architecture. It is where the lord marries Deivanai, the divine daughter of the king of heaven, Indra. The temple is located 5 miles from Madurai in India. In the main shrine, apart from Muruga, deities of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Vinayaka and Goddess Durga are housed.

One of the curious thing about this temple is that, the Gods Shiva and Vishnu face each other in the main shrine, and this is a rare thing in ancient Hindu temples. This is because Hinduism always held two distinct worshipping groups - Shaivites (worshippers of Lord Shiva) and Vaishnavites (worshippers of Lord Vishnu). Outside the temple there is a beautiful pond where, according to Temple tradition, the fishes are served with salt and rice flakes by the devotees. There is also a Vedic school adjacent to the banks of the temple pond.

The Palace, on the east main street is a series of large and rambling buildings of fine masonry, built partly by the Nayaks around 1550 AD, and partly by the Marathas. The entrance is by way of a large quandrangular courtyard. The encircling walls are pierced by big gateways to the north and east. The courtyard leads to a many-pillared hall. A small inner courtyard gives access to a large one.

On the southern side of the third quadrangle is a vimana like building, 190 feet high with eight storeys and it is the Goodagopuram. This was the palace watch tower and also the armoury of the Thanjavur Kings till 1855 A.D.

The two Durbar Halls of the Nayaks and the Mahrattas and the Raja Sarafoji Saraswathi Mahal Library are the chief sights of the Palace. The Saraswathi Mahal Library has remarkable collection of about 30,433 sanskrit and other vernacular palm leaf manuscripts and 6,426 printed volumes, besides a large number of journals. The library is the effort of the three hundred years of collections by the Nayak and Mahratta kings.

Madamaligai is the tower which rises from the palace roof beyond the Goodagopuram. It has six storeys. It is believed that this was built by Nayak ruler to enable him worship Sri Ranganatha of Srirangam every mid-day. This many storeyed tower was destroyed by lightning and was subsequently repaired and preserved.

The Sangita Mahal or the Music Hall is a miniature of the surviving court of Thirumalai Nayak's.

The Aayiram Kaal Mandapam or thousand pillar hall is of very high sculptural importance and contains 985 (instead of 1000) magnificiently carved pillars and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The thousand pillar hall is supposed to have been built by Arya Natha Mudaliyar, the Prime Minister of the first Nayaka of Madurai (1559-1600 A.D.), the founder of 'Poligar System'. An equestrian statue of the Mudaliyar flanks one side of the steps leading to the 'mandapam'. Each pillar is sculptured and is a monument of the Dravidan sculpture. There is a Temple Art Museum in this 1000 pillars hall where you can see icons, photographs, drawings, etc., exhibiting the 1200 years old history. Just outside this mandapam, towards the west, are the Musical Pillars. Each pillar, when struck, produces a different musical note. The kalyana mandapa, to the south of the pillared hall, is where the marriage of Shiva and Parvati is celebrated every year during the Chithirai Festival in mid-April.
